Fiorentina Women were on the wrong end of a 3-0 defeat at home to Juventus in Serie A Femminile on Sunday, which saw the Bianconere pull clear of their rivals at the top of the standings. The result was arguably harsh on the hosts, particularly as it was goalless at the break despite Cecilie Fiskerstrand being called into action on numerous occasions.
The course of the match changed in the space of three second-half minutes when Juventus took the lead through Sofia Cantone, who finished off a sweeping counter-attack after a Fiorentina corner. The Viola almost hit straight back when Agnese Bonfantini fired over a golden chance, but were made to rue the miss when Cantore went up the other end to double the visitors’ advantage with a fine right-footed strike into the corner. The hosts’ attempts to get back into the contest were in vain as Juventus added gloss to the scoreline through Barbara Bonansea’s fine finish on the counter.
The loss brings an impressive 2024 to a close for Fiorentina, having secured a place in the UEFA Women Champions League, a Coppa Italia final berth and so many incredible feelings and moments domestically and in Europe. The Viola will have a couple of days to wind down ahead of the Christmas break before returning to prepare for the first showdown of 2025: the Italian Super Cup final against Roma at 15:30 CET on 6 January 2025 at the Stadio Picco in La Spezia.
