Gosens post Torino

Robin Gosens was interviewed after his side were held to a 1-1 draw against Torino at home. Here’s some of what the German had to say:

I’d imagine that Fiorentina were after something other than a draw today against Torino.

“Of course. I’m disappointed, like the whole team, because we really wanted to win today – it would’ve been really important to get back to winning ways after a bit of a difficult period. We didn’t manage to do so, and we’ve now got to understand why that happened.”

Where did Fiorentina go wrong?

“We’re paying the price for poor play. Almost anything that happens near our goal results in us conceding, and right now we’re lacking the mental strength to get over these issues. Our belief consequently takes a hit, and we hand the initiative to the opposition. We’ve got to get our self-confidence back. Mistakes are part of football, and we made some when we were on our eight-game winning streak, it’s just that before we had the mental fortitude to deal with them. However, right now we’re lacking in that regard.”

From your experience, how does a team get itself out of such a situation?

“It’s not the first tough experience of my career. I’ve learnt that if you blame others, it makes everything worse. We’ve got to be more united than ever. Even if the atmosphere is negative on the outside we’ve got to pull together as a dressing room. We’ve got to realize that mistakes are a part of football and we’ve got to be positive. Only by thinking positively can you get out of such a situation. If you let negativity creep in everything becomes harder.”

What about the whistling from the fans?

“We accept the fans’ whistling, because they’ve got their expectations. We put an eight-game winning streak together, so expectations were created as a result of this. As a player I know how the fans can help us, so we need to be united and positive. This is the only way we can get out of this situation.”
