Boss Raffaele Palladino fielded questions from the media following his side’s 1-1 draw on Sunday against Torino. Here’s some of what our coach had to say:
What went wrong?
"First of all, we're disappointed not to have gotten three points. We created so many opportunities, we went ahead and we had numerical superiority. We’re disappointed to have not got a second goal – in Serie A if you don’t kill games off then anything can happen. We could’ve done better. The lads tried to give their all – I liked the spirit they showed.
“Of course you’re going to be disheartened if you haven’t won in six games. However, we’ve got to look at the glass half full – we’re sixth in the league, ahead of teams such as Milan and Roma. We’ve also got the fourth-best defense in Serie A. There are so many positives, and we’ve got the second half of the season ahead of us. We know that we have to get out of this situation."
What’s your team lacking? Is it a mental issue?
"This week we worked on getting some positive energy and I think it showed on the pitch. We played well and had many shots on goal. We’re definitely suffering a bit mentally at the moment. Right now we’ve got to avoid negative thoughts and it's my job to work on it with the team."
Have you spoken to the president?
“No, I came straight here after having a word with my team.”
To what extent was the fact that Michael Kayode and Jonathan Ikone weren’t called up related to potential movements in the transfer market?
“The club deals with coming and goings and does their best job in that regard. My job is to focus on coaching matters and right now that’s what’s most important. They’re obviously decisions made by the club related to the transfer market.”
Do you have a message for the fans, who protested at the end? How do you explain certain choices that you made?
"I understand the fans – we feel it as much as them when we don’t win. We’re disappointed and we have to do more to get out of this predicament, but words alone don’t suffice - we need action. I know how to improve such a situation. The lads really care and want to bring the fans joy. As for the choices I made, I try to do my best. I can make mistakes and be criticized but I see my players every day and I just try to get the best out of them.”
What did you make of Michael Folorunsho in his new role?
“He did a good job, both playing higher up and deeper. I’m delighted that he’s joined the club – he gives us something that we were lacking.”
Did your team relax too much at the start of the second half?
“We were sluggish with our pressing – we’ve got to be better in this regard. Their goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic played a lot of long balls so I wanted to keep the team more compact. We knew that this could cause us issues.”
