The hosts took an early lead as Karol Swiderski fired in an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box. Nikola Maksimovic doubled their advantage in the 19th minute, just as Fiorentina seemed to be gaining momentum. However, the Viola remained composed and responded quickly.

First, Lucas Beltran scored with a header and then Nicolo Fagioli was set up by Robin Gosens to level the scoreline between the 20th and 23rd minutes.

A potential 3-2 goal by Matias Moreno was disallowed by mere centimetres after Pietro Comuzzo’s header struck the post.

In the second half, Panathinaikos reclaimed the lead as Tete finished off a swift counter-attack with a precise strike to put the hosts 3-2 ahead.

The match ended with Panathinaikos taking a lead into the second leg in seven days’ time at the Stadio Franchi, which will determine who advances to the quarter-finals.
