The final of the 1st edition of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup was the only one to be played over two legs. The first match was played on 17 May 1961 at the Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow between Rangers and Fiorentina. Around 80,000 spectators attended the match. The match, refereed by the Austrian Erich Steiner, ended 2-0 for the Viola.

The return match was played after ten days at the Comunale in Florence eand was refereed by the Hungarian Vilmos Hernádi. Around 50,000 spectators attended the match and the match ended 2-1 for the Italians.
